Here is a picture of the Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh, which is nowhere near as good as one of their pictures (but I like it anyway). #

Yesterday I got myself a new tripod. My 'real' tripod went missing en route from Osaka to Chiba, never to appear again. I have been using an old tripod which was better than nothing, but had quite a lot of wobble around the head. Then one of the screws holding the legs on fell out, and it became useless. So after 3 months of doing without, I felt now was the time to get a new one. I was expecting to spend quite a bit of money as I wanted something fairly solid, and I wanted a ball head. Imagine my delight to find a bargain on Calumet's web site - the Manfrotto digi 724B. I'm (realistically) only going to be using fairly wide lenses with my camera, so there isn't need for a pro-type model (such as the 055 I wanted). My new tripod weighs much less, is more compact, and does 95% of what I want from a tripod. The centre column is reversible, the head can support up to 3.5kg, and fully extended it is surprisingly stiff, and taller than me! The best bit? It cost £30.88! (6000円)

In my parents' garden, just before we moved up to Edinburgh, a sparrowhawk has been visiting recently. It usually doesn't hang around for more than a minute at a time, and has at least once caught a small bird as a snack.
I was washing the lunchtime dishes when some movement outside, seen through the corner of my eye, caught my attention. The sparrowhawk had landed on our apple tree. I dashed to the living room, picked up my mum's camera, and dashed back to see if I could catch a shot or two. Sure enough, it soon left, but not before I got a few pictures. The pictures which follow are the best three of the four I took. All were at maximum zoom, handheld, through 2 panes of glass. #

At the beginning of December, we went out for a drive around the Chilterns (a range of ridge/hills west of London. Some years ago, it was one of the reintroduction sites for the (then highly endangered) red kite. Now you can be almost guaranteed countless sightings in just a few minutes.
We got out of the car to walk across a field to take a vantage point. Little did we expect to see so many kites, and so close. So close in fact, that it was hard to capture them on film! They were so fast, circling and swooping, seemingly enjoying the chilly late afternoon. As the day drew to an end, we could see over 20 of these beautiful birds in a group, just out of decent picture range. Counting on the magnified picture revealed 23 red kites, all together. Fantastic! #
